Evolve carries out research on practices and specific areas of law to identify areas of improvement and to inform law reform.

Our expertise and involvement in hundreds of capital hearings in Uganda has enabled us to identify the various inconsistencies in approach to sentencing individuals convicted of capital offences. Over the last year, we analysed 574 sentencing judgments, looking at sentencing practices and patterns before and after the introduction of the Constitution (Sentencing Guidelines for Courts of Judicature) (Practice) Directions, 2013.  Our findings were presented at the 20th Annual Judges’ Conference in Uganda.
